I’ve got my hands on the LG 27GL831A-B, and here’s my LG 27GL83A-B review. I’ve got my hands on one of the swiftest IPS panels out there, delivering virtually no ghosting during gameplay and showcasing colors and details that are both vibrant and sharp.
The LG 27GL83A-B brings to the table a highly sought-after 1440p IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, all at a price point that will make you seriously reconsider its competition. Interestingly, this monitor finds itself up against its near-twin, the slightly more upscale 27GL850, which boasts Nano IPS technology as its primary edge.
If you’re searching for a speedy, smooth, and crisp IPS gaming monitor, the LG 27GL83A-B offers fantastic value. But let’s dive deeper and see if it’s worth your investment. So, without further ado, here’s my LG 27GL83A-B review.
LG 27GL83A-B Review
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing this stunning 1440p, 144Hz monitor, and let me tell you, it was a total game-changer.
Watching YouTube videos became an absolute delight, thanks to the incredible detail and vibrant colors this display brought to the table.
However, I couldn’t help but notice how tiny everything appeared on the Home Screen – from the menu bar to the desktop programs, even the browser font size felt incredibly small.
To remedy this, I tweaked my settings, adjusted the zoom level to 110%, and voilà – everything looked “normal” again.
Thankfully, those were the only adjustments needed for this monitor. I’m aware that with non-IPS panels, you often have to fiddle with color shading and other settings to achieve optimal visuals, which is why I opted for an IPS display.
Oh, and a quick word of advice – stick to the “fast” mode and avoid switching to “faster” unless you’re a fan of shadowing. Trust me on this one!
Design and Features
The LG 27GL83A-B showcases a sleek, minimalist design for which the brand has become known in its gaming display lineup.
Sporting an all-matte black finish, it features subtle touches of red in key areas like the rear chassis vents. With bezel-free sides on three of its edges, you can fully immerse yourself in the crisp QHD visuals.
Although the monitor’s housing is quite slim and flat, the base may take up a bit more space compared to other options on the market.
However, the near-borderless screen makes it an excellent choice for multi-display setups. Plus, considering that this model is more affordable than its closest competitors, going for a multi-monitor configuration isn’t too far-fetched.
The build quality of the LG 27GL83A-B is quite impressive, featuring thick plastics and a well-crafted body that seamlessly fits together at every angle.
While there is a slight wobble, it’s not a cause for concern. Additionally, I didn’t notice any cosmetic defects or imperfections on the device’s surfaces or edges.
One of the things that stood out to me was LG’s user-friendly approach to OSD controls. A centrally-located OSD joystick at the bottom bezel makes it easy to access, while the On-Screen Control feature enables you to adjust settings directly within Windows.
Traditional buttons can be confusing and prone to accidental presses, especially in the dark.
The stand of the LG 27GL83A-B provides a decent range of adjustments, enhancing the overall usability for your setup. You can tilt and pivot the screen, but more importantly, adjust its height to align perfectly with your line of sight.

The wing-shaped base takes up a fair amount of desk space, but this trade-off ensures the monitor’s stability, preventing accidents.
When it comes to connectivity, the LG 27GL83A-B offers a single DisplayPort 1.4 connection and a pair of HDMI 2.0 ports.
While you won’t find USB 3.0 connectors like those on the 27LG850, I believe the reduced price point more than makes up for it. There’s also a 3.5mm jack available, but be aware that this monitor doesn’t come with built-in speakers.
Performance:
The LG 27GL83A-B boasts one of the fastest IPS panels out there, with a 1ms (GtG) pixel response time, ensuring ghosting is a thing of the past in fast-paced games.
To achieve this incredible speed, you must set the response time overdrive option to ‘Faster’ within the OSD (On-Screen Display) menu. However, be warned that this may result in inverse ghosting or pixel overshoot.
Thankfully, setting the overdrive option to ‘Fast’ eliminates overshoot and visible trailing behind rapidly moving objects. While it may not be exactly 1ms, it’s more than quick enough to keep up with the 144Hz refresh rate.
With an input lag of just around 4ms, the LG 27GL83A-B ensures there’s virtually no delay between your actions and the on-screen result. It also supports AMD FreeSync with a 48-144Hz VRR (variable refresh rate) range over DisplayPort and 48-100Hz over HDMI, providing tear-free gaming experiences.
NVIDIA has certified the monitor as G-SYNC compatible, so rest assured, FreeSync will work seamlessly with compatible NVIDIA GPUs.
LG 27GL83A-B Best Settings
If you prefer color accuracy over overly saturated visuals, there are three main settings options you can consider:
1) Opt for sRGB mode: By choosing this mode, you’ll disable settings like color temperature, contrast, and sharpness, leaving only brightness adjustable. This approach will give you more accurate colors without oversaturation.
2) Select Gamer 1 mode and tweak the RGB controls to 49-50-49, as demonstrated in Rtings’ video. In my opinion, these adjustments result in a fantastic color representation.
3) Calibrate the monitor: If you want the most precise color accuracy, consider investing in a colorimeter and calibrating your monitor according to your specific needs and preferences.
